Lab: Investigate Booting On Your Computer

Objectives

Examine the boot sequence of your own computer in class

What to do

Your first job is to find out what the current boot order of your computer in class is. When you first turn on your computer there should be a manufacturer screen that says (in the corner) press F2 for Setup and F12 for the boot order or something similar. Press the button that it says for the boot order. An ordered list should pop up on your screen tha shows you the order of boot devices. Jot down that order somewhere on your website. How does your order compare to other classmates’ orders?

Next you are going to change your boot order. Restart your computer and at that manufacturer screen press the button that it says for Setup. Once in setup, there should be an option titled “boot sequence” or “boot order”. It should pop up with all the possibilities for your boot order. Some devices might be disabled. You can enable or disable some devices and move devices up and down through the list. You probably are not going to want to touch the first device in the list since that is the absolute most important. Whatever you change, make sure you go back and change it to the order it was originally (check the list you wrote down for reference on your original configuration).
